We tell them that we love them. We tell them that they matter and that their lives matter. We tell them that they are somebody. We tell them….and then we tell them again.
Once, I told them, “The first time I showed up it was to tell you that you matter. I continue to show up because you don’t hear that enough.”
Eventually, I would learn that many of us don’t hear those words enough. And amazingly, I realized that we are receivers of the things we tell— Because what I told them, also shifted something in me.
Why keep quiet about the things that really matter? Can we ever tell or hear the good things enough? you should tell them, hear the words for yourself, and then tell them again.
Context: This was inspired by a group of young women that I volunteer with. When we tell them things like “You matter, you are somebody…”, a shift happens as they start to consider and own what that means. And although it is the truth, how will they ever truly know this if nobody tells them? Through experience, I am learning that there is power in what we tell.
